There were absolutely no takers. Appears that my little campus restaurant reviews weren?t enough of a threat. After per week of clenching my teeth, asking for friends to become listed on me, and begging people on the newspaper staff in the future, a Wednesday night arrived and I?d nobody to join me for supper. Restaurant reviews were the most fun thing to happen to me at school, and I didn?t wish to give them up, particularly with a lot of folk queuing for my job, but nothing scared me a lot more than asking a hostess for a table for just one.

I wrote my cafe review also it was one the best I experienced ever written, even earning me a little promotion to forty food dollars per month. I kept writing until the end from the semester, and all through my older year. Sometimes a friend or sweetheart joined me on my Wednesday outings, but ever since that first open public meal alone, the night before I wrote my personal restaurant reviews became a night on my own to unwind, and participate in among my favorite activities: eating.

Half of workers would take pay cut for more flextime

Give me more workplace flexibility, or give me death.

Well, maybe not death. But it turns out employees are willing to sacrifice a lot in exchange for more flexibility at work.

A survey by staffing company Mom Corps released Thursday found that so-called "workflex opportunities" are worth more than money for some employees.

Here are some of the findings from Mom Corps? second annual Labor Day poll, conducted by Harris Interactive:

• Nearly half of working adults surveyed (45 percent) are willing to give up some percentage of their salary for more flexibility at work.
• And they?re willing to give back nearly 9 percent of their wages on average, an uptick from the amount they would be willing to fork over in last year's survey (5.8 percent).

?We are beginning to see significant patterns in the value professionals of all ages place on workplace flexibility,? said?Allison O?Kelly, founder and CEO of Mom Corps. ?More and more, we feel challenged by the collective pressures of a demanding work life, a hectic personal life and a desire to find fulfillment in both.?

Unfortunately, according to Families and Work Institute (FWI) data, workflex arrangements aren?t exactly exploding in the workplace to meet the demand.

Only 3 percent of wage and salary employees work mainly from home, said Ken Matos, senior director of employment research and practice at the Institute, and co-author of the forthcoming book ?WORKFLEX: The Essential Guide to Effective and Flexible Workplaces.?

And of those employees who do not get to work part of their regular paid hours at home, 50 percent would like to.

Employees are so serious about finding the right flexible options at work that nearly 90 percent of the workers FWI surveyed said that when they look for a new job workflex will be ?extremely? or ?very important? in their decision process, according to Matos, who will be taking questions about workflex options and how to get them from NBCNews.com readers during a live web chat Thursday at noon ET.

Mom Corps? survey results bolstered FWI?s findings that flex time is a high priority.

Their poll found many employees, 52 percent, would consider starting their own business in order to find the flexibility they crave, with men age 35 to 44 the most anxious to do this at 75 percent.

Despite the gloomy work-flex landscape today, however, 67 percent of employees agree it is possible to "have it all" when it comes to work-life fit.

Mississippi River flows backwards due to Isaac

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Strong winds and storm surge from Hurricane Isaac's landfall forced the Mississippi River to flow backwards for nearly 24 hours on Tuesday, August 28. The USGS streamgage at Belle Chasse, Louisiana, showed the Mississippi River flowing upstream at 182,000 cubic feet per second, surging to 10 feet above than its previous height. Average flow for the Mississippi River at Belle Chase is about 125,000 cfs towards the Gulf of Mexico.

Although it doesn't happen often, hurricanes can cause coastal rivers to reverse flow. Between the extremely strong winds and the massive waves of water pushed by those winds, rivers at regular or low flow are forced backwards until either the normal river-flow or the elevation of the land stop the inflow.

As Hurricane Isaac pushes further inland, it is causing storm surge in the Mississippi River as far north as Baton Rouge, where the river has crested at 8 feet above its prior height.

"This reversal of flow of the mighty Mississippi is but one measure of the extreme force of Isaac," said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. "While such events are ephemeral, they are yet another reminder of why we need to respect hurricane warnings."

When Hurricane Katrina came ashore in 2005, the Mississippi River also reversed flow, cresting at 13 feet above its previous level, with Baton Rouge reaching 9 feet above its previous stage as well.

Another phenomenon that USGS streamgages have recorded as Hurricane Isaac moves inland is that periodically, coastal rivers in Louisiana have lost height, only to gain it back again soon after. This rising and falling of the rivers is a common occurrence during hurricanes and is caused by the spiral nature of these storms.

As the winds sweep to the southwest, they force water out of the rivers, lowering their height. However, once the winds complete their turn to the southwest, they begin back to the northeast, allowing the storm surge to raise the river levels.

These oddities in river behavior are recorded in real-time by USGS' extensive network of streamgages, located through Louisiana and the rest of the country. These streamgages, which are installed along rivers and streams, record data like streamflow, river height, and, in some cases, even water chemistry.

Many transmit their data in real-time to satellites, updating with new information every 15 minutes. This wealth of data allows USGS scientists, emergency managers and responders, and even the general public to have accurate and up-to-date knowledge of what the rivers and streams in their areas are doing. This data is particularly critical during massive flooding events like Hurricane Isaac.

In fact, anyone can sign up to receive notices from USGS streamgages when waters are rising in nearby rivers and streams through a program called WaterAlert (http://water.usgs.gov/wateralert/). It is a free service that allows members of the public to receive notifications about water levels at any of over 7,000 USGS real-time streamgages around the country. Google Maps updated to v6.11.1, runs short on changelog information

The latest Google Maps update has now appeared in the Google Play Store and shows the app has been bumped up to v6.11.1. After the last update, many HTC Rezound users had issues and were forced to downgrade to an earlier version so this might be a fix for that given Google hasn't really posted a changelog for it as of yet. In fact, it looks like they simply reworded the last one:

• See borders of cities, postal codes, and more highlighted on search.
• Browse a day-by-day display of where you've been using location history.
• Improved transit information layer and added the ability to browse by mode of transportation.

If you happened to have any issues with the older build, go ahead and give this one a shot and see if there is any changes. We'll keep an eye on the changelog and see if Google adjusts it in anyway and update if necessary.

Nutrition tied to improved sperm DNA quality in older men

A new study led by scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) found that a healthy intake of micronutrients is strongly associated with improved sperm DNA quality in older men. In younger men, however, a higher intake of micronutrients didn't improve their sperm DNA.

In an analysis of 80 healthy male volunteers between 22 and 80 years of age, the scientists found that men older than 44 who consumed the most vitamin C had 20 percent less sperm DNA damage compared to men older than 44 who consumed the least vitamin C. The same was true for vitamin E, zinc, and folate.

"It appears that consuming more micronutrients such as vitamin C, E, folate and zinc helps turn back the clock for older men. We found that men 44 and older who consumed at least the recommended dietary allowance of certain micronutrients had sperm with a similar amount of DNA damage as the sperm of younger men," says Andy Wyrobek of Berkeley Lab's Life Sciences Division.

"This means that men who are at increased risk of sperm DNA damage because of advancing age can do something about it. They can make sure they get enough vitamins and micronutrients in their diets or through supplements," adds Wyrobek.

Wyrobek conducted the research with a team of researchers that includes Brenda Eskenazi of the University of California at Berkeley's School of Public Health and scientists from the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom. They report their findings in the August 27 online issue of the journal Fertility and Sterility.

Their research comes as more men over 35 have children, which raises public health concerns. Previous research conducted in Wyrobek's lab found that the older a man is, the more he's likely to have increased sperm DNA fragmentation, chromosomal rearrangements, and DNA strand damage. Older men are also more likely to have increased frequencies of sperm carrying certain gene mutations, such as those leading to dwarfism. These findings help explain why aging men are less fertile and are predicted to have more chromosomally defective pregnancies and a higher proportion of offspring with genetic defects.

But until now, researchers haven't understood whether diet can protect against the detrimental effects of aging on the sperm genome.

The scientists studied a group of about 80 men between 20 and 80 years old with an average age of 44. They were recruited several years ago as part of the California Age and Genetic Effects on Sperm Study when Wyrobek was at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Each man who participated in the study filled out a 100-item questionnaire that estimated their average daily vitamin intake, both from food and supplements.

In addition, their sperm DNA quality was assessed via a lab analysis in which a voltage gradient pulls broken DNA strands from intact strands within the sperm nucleus.

Each volunteer's intake of a micronutrient was classified as low, moderate, or high based on how they compared to other participants. The median daily intake, both from diet and supplements, was 162 milligrams for vitamin C, 23.7 milligrams for vitamin E, 2,586 micrograms for ?-carotene, 475 grams for folate, and 12.3 milligrams for zinc. Many participants, even those who reported to be healthy, consumed much less than the recommended dietary allowance for many of the micronutrients.

The scientists analyzed the data several ways and came up with the same result each time: A diet high in antioxidants and micronutrients may decrease the risk of producing sperm with DNA damage, especially in older men.

Why this is so isn't a mystery. Antioxidants scavenge reactive molecules that cause oxidative damage to cells. Studies have shown that dietary supplementation with antioxidants and increased consumption of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables can decrease the amount of oxidative DNA damage.

Based on their results, the scientists believe this same protective mechanism may also be at work in the reproductive tract of older men.

"The different response of the old and young men presents new opportunities for health care, especially for older men planning families," says Wyrobek.

More research is needed, however. Although the scientists found a clear link between higher vitamin intake and improved sperm DNA quality in older men, they don't know whether this link extends to male fertility and the health of offspring.

"Our research points to a need for future studies to determine whether increased antioxidant intake in older fathers will improve fertility, reduce risks of genetically defective pregnancies, and result in healthier children," says Wyrobek. "The research also raises a broader question beyond sperm DNA: How might lifestyle factors, including higher intakes of antioxidants and micronutrients, protect somatic as well as germ cells against age-related genomic damage?"

Edwards, Ford teams discuss look of 2013 NASCAR Fusion in video

NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Carl Edwards, his crew chief Chad Norris and Wood Brothers owners Len and Eddie Wood weighed in on the new 2013 NASCAR Ford Fusion during a test session at Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Va., on Aug. 7.

The test session was the first since NASCAR approved the 2013 models for competition.

?This is the first time I?ve driven the 2013 NASCAR Fusion, and it?s great,? Edwards said. ?Ford has done a great job with us, and at the end of the day we like fast cars and we like neat cars. That?s why I started racing, and that?s why all of these guys enjoy the sport so much, so it?s really cool to walk in the garage and see such a beautiful Ford race car sitting there.?

While Edwards was turning laps around the half-mile oval, many observers said that the new racing Fusion brought back memories from past decades when race cars had a distinct look.

?I really like it because it looks like the Fusion that?s going to be in the showroom,? said Eddie Wood, co-owner of the No. 21 Motorcraft Fusion and lifelong NASCAR competitor. ?The biggest thing I like about it is it reminds me of the ?69 Cyclones and Torinos and Talladegas with the Cyclone spoilers we ran in the late ?60s. It?s got the fastback roof and all that, so I?m looking forward to painting ours red and white.

?It?s a modern look, but it?s kind of got a throwback style,? Wood continued. ?I think it?s got everything. I think it?s got appeal for the young people that are of age to buy cars, and I think it?s got the appeal of guys my age that have been around a while. I wish we could run it now.?

His brother, Len, felt much the same way saying, ?I think it looks like the cars we used to race, the old Mercurys and Torinos and things we had back in the ?70s. Court Victory Boosts Prospects For Residential Clean Energy PACE Programs

Supporters of an innovative clean energy financing scheme welcomed a favorable court ruling earlier this month. On August 9, a federal district court judge in California ruled (PDF) that the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) violated federal law when it decided, without public notice or opportunity for stakeholders to comment, in July 2010, not to underwrite mortgages on homes with property assessed clean energy (PACE) loans.

As I wrote in January, FHFA was concerned that in most states with PACE programs the liens resulting from the PACE loans have priority over mortgages ? the PACE lender would be paid ahead of the bank, or Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, in the case of foreclosure.

PACE watcher Ethan Elkind, who holds a joint appointment at the UCLA and UC Berkeley law schools, called the ruling a ?decisive win? for the plaintiffs, which includes the California Attorney General?s Office. ?With this decision,? Elkind wrote at the Legal Planet blog, ?the FHFA PACE policy is officially toast until the agency can develop a final rule pending the outcome of an ongoing rulemaking process.?

The public can submit comments (PDF) to inform that rulemaking process until September 13.

?This decision does not clear up the long-term uncertainty around PACE, but it limits the FHFA?s ability to issue a sweeping policy undercutting the program,? said Elkind. ?The final rule (whatever form it takes) will be subject to APA [Administrative Procedure Act] requirements and likely judicial scrutiny.?

The district court ruling does not settle the matter. The FHFA can appeal, and a higher court might need to resolve contrary PACE decisions in New York courts, according to Elkind.

Under the circumstances, he says, ?Local governments may be hesitant to restart their PACE programs until these questions are answered, and they?ve already missed a crucial window to use now-spent stimulus funds to launch them.?

PACE financing enables property owners to take out a loan, usually via city- or state-organized bonds, to pay for energy efficiency upgrades or onsite renewable energy. Loans are repaid, typically over 20 years, through an annual supplemental property tax assessment.

Cooperative solution with the FHFA?

In a recent interview, I spoke with Ygrene Energy Fund President Dan Schaefer about the August 9 court ruling and what comes next for residential PACE programs. Regular readers of this blog will remember the name. I interviewed Schaefer and Ygrene Chairman Dennis Hunter for an April post on the pending launch of Ygrene?s South Florida Green Corridor District PACE program. Ygrene assists local governments in establishing PACE districts for commercial and residential properties.

?We think that the win in the California [federal district] courts is a real positive step in terms of establishing this asset class and recognizing public benefit as it relates to energy reductions and the need for massive reduction in energy use in the United States,? says Schaefer.

Oshkosh Corp. awarded military contract for prototype lightweight vehicles

Oshkosh Corp. announced Thursday that the U.S. Department of Defense has awarded the company?s defense division a contract to produce 22 prototype lightweight tactical vehicles through the program that looks to replace the military?s aged Humvees.

The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle program seeks a Humvee replacement that's a ?lightweight vehicle that offers greater protection, mobility and transportability.?

?The JLTV program is critical to supporting our troops who stand in harm?s way and deserve the best equipment that industry can provide,? said John Urias, Oshkosh Corp. executive vice president and Oshkosh Defense president, in a news release. ?The Oshkosh JLTV solution will allow the Army and Marine Corps to provide unprecedented levels of protection and off-road mobility in a light vehicle, so that their troops can accomplish their missions and return home safely.?

Oshkosh (NYSE: OSK) will deliver the prototypes within a year and support government testing and evaluation. The Oshkosh prototype is ?fully tested, ready for initial production and meets or exceeds the requirements of the JLTV program,? the company said.

The Oshkosh prototype, called the Light Combat Tactical All-Terrain Vehicle, or L-ATV, features an advanced crew protection system, can accept multiple armor configurations and includes a proprietary independent-suspension system to allow for faster speeds when driving off-road.

The former Pakistani ambassador to Washington says the two countries should face the fact that their goals and priorities are not going to converge any time soon, and so should drop their stormy partnership to forge a ?post-alliance future? based on reality over expectations and each country?s self-interest.

?If in 65 years we haven?t been able to find sufficient common ground to live together ? maybe the best is to find friendship outside the marital bond,? says Mr. Haqqani, who was Islamabad?s ambassador to Washington until last November when he fell prey to a Pakistani political scandal.

Haqqani?s conclusion ? which he plans to explore in a book to be published next spring, entitled ?Magnificent Delusions? ? is a variation on the theme of those policy experts in both countries who say the two unhappy partners should ?divorce? rather than prolong a dysfunctional marriage where neither side likes or trusts the other.

?I?m not for [the US] declaring Pakistan an enemy,? Haqqani cautions, adding that his reason for proposing a ?parting of ways? is so that ?the important things can actually be addressed.?

One example: Pakistan?s nuclear arsenal, and ensuring that it remains secure. Without the fixation on ?a broad alliance that doesn?t exist,? he says, ?you can ? focus on the specific problem.?

He also hints that Pakistan?s bond to the US, and in particular the military and security focus of the relationship, have held Pakistan back from maturing politically in ways it might have been forced to otherwise. ?Pakistan ends up behaving like Syria, but wanting to be treated like Israel,? he says.

Haqqani spoke Wednesday at the Center for the National Interest in Washington, before taking up the academic year as a professor of international relations at Boston University ? a post he held before becoming ambassador in April 2008.
