As more autism reported, doctors say check early
CHICAGO (AP) ? At 18 months, Cristina Astacio spoke only a few words, wouldn't respond to her name and shunned other kids in her day care group. Last October, her worried parents found out why.
She has a mild form of autism, a diagnosis being given to more U.S. children than ever before, largely because of more awareness and better diagnosis.
According to new government statistics, the rate is about 1 in 88. That means autism is nearly twice as common as it appeared in data the government gathered 10 years ago. The largest increases are in Hispanic kids like Cristina.
The definition of autism has changed over the years, and Cristina might not have been considered autistic two decades ago.
But experts say kids like her are lucky in a way, because her parents recognized early that something was wrong. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report issued Thursday found that 40 percent of kids weren't diagnosed until after age 4. Evidence shows that children who are identified early and get help have the best chance for reaching their potential, said CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends autism screening for all children at age 18 months and 2 years.
Diagnosing the developmental disorder relies on observing behavior. Autism can't be cured, but treatment including intensive behavior therapy can help many kids function better.
The academy's Dr. Susan Hyman said many children who aren't making eye contact and aren't talking "may have autism, but they may have other things." She said it's important for parents to be persistent about their concerns with their doctor so their kids can be evaluated.
Kristy Batesole, of Atascadero, Calif., says she suspected something was wrong with her son, Keegan, even when he was a hard-to-calm overly fussy baby. He learned words, but by age 2 stopped talking, would spend hours opening and closing doors and sometimes bang his head on the ground.
Though he started getting special help in preschool in Nevada, he wasn't formally diagnosed with autism until last year, at age 6, after the family moved to California, where there are more autism specialists.
Cristina Astacio gets two hours of behavior therapy six days a week. Her mom, Charisse, says the little girl now responds to commands and speaks about 50 words. The most special are two words Cristina never said before. "Now she says 'mommy' and 'daddy,'" Astacio said. "It's wonderful."
Christina's dad, Christopher, is a special-education teacher in the New York City; most of the kids in his class are Hispanic and many have autism.
"I remember back in the past, a few kids here and there had autism, not like the way it is now," Astacio said. "I'm really curious why so many kids are being diagnosed."
Experts, including CDC researchers, think broader screening and better diagnosis have largely contributed to that. But autism's cause remains a mystery, and government researchers are seeking answers.
The latest numbers are based on 2008 data from 14 states. The new rate is nearly two times higher than data suggested in 2002, roughly 1 in 150 kids. And it's 23 percent higher than a later estimate of 1 in 110 based on 2006 data. Rates are highest in boys and white children. But the biggest rate increase was among Hispanics, from 1 in 270 in 2002 to about 1 in 125 in 2008.
That rate increase also is likely due to better awareness. The CDC report says there's no strong evidence of any racial or ethnic difference in risk factors for autism and that it's likely the condition is underdiagnosed in blacks and Hispanics.
Melissa Miller, a St. Petersburg, Fla., mom whose daughter, Chelsea, was diagnosed last year at age 2, said many people still misunderstand the disorder.
"I think many people hear 'autism' and think 'Rain Man,'" she said, referring to the 1988 movie featuring Dustin Hoffman as the mathematically brilliant but socially impaired autistic savant.
"The autism spectrum is so vast, and all of our children are different. Many of them don't rock back and forth or have savant skills. They are sweet, affectionate, intelligent, goofy ? and exhausting ? kids," Miller said.
Proposed revisions in the manual that doctors use to diagnose mental illness would streamline autism criteria. Critics contend the suggested changes would be too narrow and exclude children who need educational and behavioral services.
Hyman noted that since the manual's last revision, in 1994, much has been learned about autism. "There's a real possibility the new definition will be better for children," she said Thursday at a CDC news conference.
CDC officials say research into causes of autism will help determine if there's been a true increase or just better diagnosis.
Genetics is believed to play a role. Studies have found no connection with childhood vaccines, but other factors under investigation include mothers' illnesses or medication during pregnancy. First results from the CDC study are expected next year.
Geraldine Dawson, chief science officer for the advocacy group Autism Speaks, said the new figures indicate "a public health emergency that demands immediate attention."
Her group estimates that U.S. autism costs total $126 billion each year, including costs related to diagnosis and treatment. That estimate also includes treatment for severely affected adults and lost wages.

98 Degrees Reuniting: Which Other Boy Bands Should Follow Suit?
O-Town, 'NSYNC make our list of boy bands that should get back together.

It's about to get 98 Degrees and rising in the boy-band bonanza. Nick Lachey's old group is rumored to be getting back together to launch a summer tour.
Sources tell Rumorfix that the band, which has been on a decade-long hiatus, is about to announce a 15-city trek set to take place in July and August. A formal announcement should be made in the next week. One source told the site that the tour would serve as a thank-you to the band's fans.
Rumors of a reunion kicked off on Wednesday, when the band's website got a face-lift that includes a spanking new logo and a Twitter feed with the guys' official pages scrolling through the homepage. A rep for the band had not responded to MTV News' request for comment by press time.
Given all the love boy bands are getting these days (see One Direction and the Wanted), there are still some that might want to capitalize on the mania sweeping the world. Here are MTV News' picks for the groups we'd love to see get back together.
O-Town O-Town was the product of the reality show "Making the Band." Once managed by imprisoned boy-band impresario Lou Pearlman, the guys managed to put their reality-show pedigree behind them and launched a short-lived, successful run that included hits like the chart-topping "Liquid Dreams."
'NSYNC This would be the gold-star reunion. 'NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys were the two boy bands of the late-'90s revival that reached mega heights of fame and success. Several albums into their career, there appeared to be no stopping Justin Timberlake and the boys. But in 2002, they went on a "temporary hiatus" and have never looked back.
Westlife Westlife plan to break up later this year after they wrap up their 2012 tour. But now seems like the right time to keep it going a little bit longer. Given America's love for boy bands that hail from the U.K., Westlife, who found fame under the guidance of Simon Cowell and serenaded ladies with tracks like "Swear It Again," might just want to stick around and ride out this latest wave of boy-band love.
Which boy band would you love to see get back together? Tell us in the comments!

If the price of gold then rises to $850 the agency gain margin improves accordingly. But it functions the other way in reverse, as well. A drop in the amount of gold could set the organisation in the red. So, the stock cost is usually even more volatile.
Distinct Sorts of Gold and Silver Agencies
In general, mining stocks fall into three broad groups. These shares are listed in descending get of danger with exploration merchants being the most dangerous and producers being much less risky.
1) Exploration
2) Progression
3) Producers
How To Shop for Gold and Silver Shares
Like any other shares, these trade on the essential U.S. and Canadian stock exchanges. I would advise averting all pink-sheet or unlisted shares as the reporting prerequisites are really minimal. The moment yet again, the only recommendation I would advise is allocating only a smallish proportion of your in general portfolio to mining stocks and to perform complete because of diligence right before buying.
Gold and Silver Mutual Funds
A different way to actually buy precious metals stocks is to make investments in actively managed open up conclude mutual money, shut finish funds and trade traded money (ETFs). Stock mutual cash are not generally direct performs, but they can benefit lessen the volatility and agency risk associated with choosing a simple company. Most open up close mutual money typically commit in fifty-125 personal holdings and comprise an inner price ratio which is netted throughout the returns. There are also mutual money that embody a ton of a variety of commodities including fuel and oil to allow for additionally diversification.

Catalytic Clothing -Purifying Air Goes Trendy
Catalytic Clothing is a ?trendy? solution to air quality and a daring environmental-fashion initiative started by former fashion designer Helen Storey and University of Sheffield Professor Anthony Ryan. This experiment between fashion and science is an endeavor to purify the air we breathe through jeans treated with nanosized particles of titanium dioxide ? the light-triggered catalyst found in sunscreen. Helen Storey, fashion genius of the Helen Storey Foundation, and Prof. Tony Ryan, polymer chemist, are partnering with Ecover to produce a simple nanoparticle formulated ?green? laundry product with potential to turn the public into an air-purifying altruistic community.
Let?s face it??our air is a mess. Generally, we are not reaching air emission targets for key pollutants that affect our environment as well as our health, including nitrogen oxides (NOx) and organic volatiles. According to the EPA, nitrogen oxides form quickly from emissions from cars, trucks and buses, power plants, and off-road equipment. NOx agents are respiratory disease and cancer causing agents in smog and react to form acid rain. In the UK alone, organic volatiles kill 29,000 people a year, and asthma is a growing problem especially among young people living in big cities with high levels of NOx and other pollutants in the air. Although several initiatives have been undertaken to reduce NOx and organic volatile pollutant concentrations in air, emissions standards remain largely unmet.
This may be about to change, and at the hand of the everyday citizen. Former fashion designer Helen Storey and polymer chemist Prof. Tony Ryan have suggested a lovely solution: build an air-purifying function into the clothes we wear all day every day. According to Storey, every single surface that is available to us ? whether the interior of our minds or the outside of our clothes and our bodies ?needs to be getting ?smarter?. Storey and Prof. Ryan are making trendy jeans ?smart? by treating them with tiny particles called nano-titania. Nano-titania, or nanosized particles of titanium dioxide, work as powerful catalyst agents that speed up the conversion of harmful NOx air pollutants to harmless byproducts that can be washed away with the rain. All right there on the surface of the everyday person?s jeans.
Storey and Prof. Ryan seek to engage the public on environmental issues through art and fashion. ?Fashion is an amazing communicator,? Storey said. ?For all its faults, one of the things it can do is spread an idea around very powerfully and coherently. It can galvanize a lot of support for it. Imagine if you could galvanize that kind of energy towards something that would actually safe life.?
?Tony and I walk around in our air-purifying jeans ? not purifying very much based on its need to be at scale ? but I wear mine in the hope that I can infinitesimally improve our air quality. Tony says he wears his so that he can fart all day and no one will know!? ? Helen Storey
Catalytic Clothing ??The solution
?It?s all about surface area,??Prof. Tony Ryan says about the nanoscale catalysts that he and Storey are using to convert the pair of jeans in the back of your closet into an air-purifying machine. This artist-and-scientist team is trying to harness the ?football pitch? of surface area of the clothes we wear on a daily basis to serve a creative and vital function (other than hiding our nakedness or communicating our style): purifying the air around us from harmful nitrogen oxides and other organic pollutants.
?We asked ourselves, could we apply something to the surface of clothing, knowing that the surface area is so much greater than many other surfaces, to solve a world problem?? ? Helen Storey
Catalytic Clothing ? The History
Fifteen years ago, Storey ended a commercial fashion career ?dressing people like Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna ??celebrities that made a living off of what they looked like or sounded like,??said Storey, in order to look for something new. She happened upon a leaflet from The Welcome Trust about an initiative called ?SciArt?. ?What they were trying to do was get scientists and artists together, the idea being that the artists could elucidate or bring to life an area of complex science in a way that the public could engage with,? Storey said. ?SciArt? was a springboard for Storey to enter a new world, and perhaps even a new era, of fashion.
?Fashion changes every 3 seconds, whereas science can take 10-15 years to get something right and to market. Catalytic clothing is ? asking fashion to slow down in order to do something that is of value and beyond the moment, and asking science to speed up because the world needs answers much more quickly than it is used to delivering them.? ? Helen Storey
Storey first partnered with Prof. Ryan on a project bridging science, the environment, and fashion after hearing him speak on a BBC Radio Series called Material World. ?He sounded a very nice combination between a stand-up comic and a science geek? so I rang him up,? Storey said. The artist and the material scientist hit it off right away; ?We started talking about the full extent to which materials could have behaviors, and how far we could push that,? Storey said.
An initial union between fashion and science, a project called Wonderland that featured rather magically disappearing dresses allowed Storey and Ryan to begin engaging the public with notions of materials, how much we consume and where our materials go and don?t go. ?We have this awkward conversation with them but through awe and beauty as opposed to scaring them, or making them feel guilty,? Storey said. The team started to realize the power of art and fashion in bringing to the public a message around science, and the possibilities of science, in ways that were much more accessible than through a journal or in the written form.
Storey and Prof. Ryan were sitting in a Wonderland project workshop with 14- and 15- year old students, talking to students about what it was like to be an artist working with a scientist and vice versa, when the idea seed for Catalytic Clothing was planted by a young female student in the audience. ?She said, ?I think what scientists should be doing is taking advantage of what happens in any case, far more often,? Storey said. ?We were both quite struck by this comment ? this notion of taking advantage of something that already exists in a new way,? Storey said.
When Prof. Ryan did an ?under the table??calculation of what the surface area of a person?s clothing is, he found that we have about a football pitch available to us at the nanoscale. ?That is a vast catalytic surface that in essence is doing nothing. It is keeping us warm, and of course our clothes say a bit to the people in front of us about who we are, or who we want to be seen as ? but it terms of being an active surface, it is doing nothing,? Storey said. And so Catalytic Clothing was born.
?Given my fashion background, it made sense that we continue to think about what the surface of us could do ? the stuff that is there in any case!? ? Helen Storey
Storey and Prof Ryan contacted Cristal Global, the worlds? 2nd largest provider of nano-titania catalysts, to suggest collaboration on an initiative with textiles instead of traditional hard surfaces. ?At first, I think they thought we were stupid,? Storey said. ?But they did their tests [with our textiles] ? and then they redid them, and they redid them, and they redid them, because they almost went off the scale in terms of efficacy.? Cristal Global had never had to measure catalyst efficacy of this potency before.
?The other thing that we found out is that denim jeans are the most efficacious surface of all,? Storey said, ?and they are also the most democratic piece of clothing in the world.? Today, there are more denim jeans on the planet than there are people. ?Even if we only ever got this to work on jeans ? we would be doing a good thing,? Storey said.
Catalytic Clothing ??The Science
Catalytic clothing is coated with nano-titania ? or nanosized titanium dioxide ? catalyst. The small particles can be washed into any piece of your clothing, for example your jeans, when you wash them in the washing machine. Storey and Prof. Ryan envision that the catalyst will be delivered through a fabric softener type of product. Catalytic Clothing has partnered with Ecover, a consumer-product company well known for being brave and pioneering in the area of the environment, to formulate such a product for public use.
??We are not asking anybody to buy something new for the sake of it ? but instead adding some radical technology to what you already own, to your existing wardrobe, simply by asking you to wash it with a specific product.? ? Helen Storey
The catalyst particles are tiny balls that measure less than 10 nanometers in diameter (1 nanometer = 1 billionth of a meter). ?Because the particles are small, they ?stick?. Once they are stuck to the surface of the fabric, they are stuck to the surface of the fabric, and they only fall off the fabric when the fabric degrades,? Prof. Ryan said. When the cotton fibers of your jeans break, and your jeans go white, the particles eventually fall off, but the traditional washing process, or running around outside, create no problem for the catalyst particles.
Nanoparticles have an extremely high surface area to volume ratio compared to particles large enough for the human eye to see. ?The majority of the [catalyst] material is surface,??explains Prof. Ryan. More surface area is key when we are talking about catalysts. Nano-titania catalysts use oxygen and light, along with their reactive surfaces, to turn nitrogen oxides into the less harmful water-soluble product nitric acid. The catalysts can also react with organic volatiles to create a familiar water soluble product: soap.
There have been various trials in London on urban surfaces like pavements and school walls using nanoparticles of titanium dioxide to remove NOx from the air. However, what these trials found was that while the nanocatalysts can keep these surfaces clean, and whilst they can purify small amounts of air, ?the volume of fumes coming at them from cars is so relentless that they don?t actually improve the air quality in human terms very much at all,? Storey said.
Prof. Ryan explains how Catalytic Clothing works with an example from ?smart?? architecture. ?Self-cleaning windows are a classic example of nano-titania catalysts,??he said. Nano-titania materials in these windows, along with oxygen, react with dirt to create a soap-like product. ?Oxidized dirt is soap, and when it reacts, the windows wash themselves,?? Prof Ryan said. The technology has also been widely used in architecture. There is a church in Rome, and another in Madrid, that are ?self-cleaning? churches. ?They stay very very white because of the action of the photocatalyst, which effectively re-bleaches the surface of the church over and over,? Prof Ryan explained.
Catalytic clothing harnesses this same chemistry to remove nitric oxide (NOx) from the air, but with a twist. While the surface area of most architectural surfaces is not particularly high, clothing has more than we know what to do with. As it turns out, a pair of jeans weighing one pound has a surface area of greater than 195 square feet ? this covers the floor space of a modest living room. ?The higher the surface area, the more NOx removal you get,? Prof Ryan said. Clothes remove far more NOx per unit area of fabric than architectural surfaces, because the effective surface area of clothing is so high.
?The leap of imagination wasn?t so much a new technology, but going back to the 14-year old girl, taking advantage of something that exists already, and just thinking of a completely different field of use. And that is where Catalytic Clothing came from,? Storey said. ?There is no new science here, we are just taking advantage of an already established technology,? Prof. Ryan said. Nanoparticles of titanium dioxide are not only found in self-cleaning windows ? you can find these particles in toothpaste and sunscreens. Nano-titania is used in sunscreens as a UV-light absorber, absorbing harmful UV rays so that our skin doesn?t have to.
So, how many people would have to wear Catalytic jeans to reach emission targets of NOX? ?We have done the maths on how many people it would take to get the city of Sheffield ? where Prof. Tony is based ? under the emissions limit for NOx,? Storey said. For the city, which produces 9000 tons of NOX every year, the answer is one third of a million people? only two thirds of the city?s total population.
Catalytic Clothing ??a Cultural Experiment
?Science often happens behind closed doors. They come out at the end and they say ?Finished!? but they often forget to ask if we even want it. I?m trying to narrow that gap, and to join all the dots in between the outside world (society) and the inside world of academia (Universities largely) ? whether that is considered an art or a science.? ? Helen Storey
Catalytic Clothing has tried to keep a global conversation going over their future product development, to feed public voice and public hopes and fears for the technology back to the science team creating the textile catalysts product. Storey was able to send a team of graduate students at the London College of Fashion ? who were studying a course known as ?Fashion and Environment? ? out into the public domain to collect public feedback on Catalytic Clothing technology as well as consider more widely how science could impact their own artistic development. See The Living Map of public feedback.
?The most popular piece of feedback you get from speaking to anybody in the street when they have just begun to understand the concept is the perception that they will become a dirt magnet,? Storey said. ?This is not how the technology works at all,? Storey said. The catalyst is only triggered and active when it meets UV light and oxygen. ?The reaction happens around you, not on you,? Storey said. ?The catalyst on your clothes triggers the reaction away from you. In effect, you are walking in your own purer bubble of air,? Storey said. ?But the lovely and rather poetic aspect of this technology is that you personally don?t benefit. You benefit the person behind you who walks in your airstream, as you benefit from the person ahead of you, as you walk in theirs. Perhaps this is the world?s first altruistic technology.?
Public feedback was a very good clue to the team about how they needed to begin to speak of their ?catalytic jeans??in order to get enough people to wear them to eventually bear an impact on air quality. ?A lot of these perceptions of the technology scientists would never have thought it ??and neither would I have actually,??Storey said. ?To be constantly kept on your toes by the reality of the street means that when this technology does become available it will already have a marketplace hungry for it,? she said,
?It only really works if everybody does it. It really is an altruistic thing to do. The problem is, how do you market altruism? Most sales are actually done on individual benefit ? so for marketing departments in big companies, this is a really big issue.? ? Prof. Ryan
This is where the union of art, science, and fashion has its role to play. Art can perhaps carry the science and environmentalism to new heights. ?We are trying to get the cultural message out first, before there is a product in the market,??Prof Ryan said. I personally think this is a wonderful and much needed union. Science is often ?sold? for science?s sake, leaving non-scientists cold on what could be innovative and successful ideas. What is most interesting about Catalytic Clothing is that in and of itself, the science is not new, but the project as a whole is artfully inspiring, and perhaps capable of radically changing our behaviors and attitudes toward our environment.

On What Education Should Do | Reference and Education
When I refer to education, what I?m talking about is more than just what schools do. That is just one part of it. I?m expanding education to include how a culture, a society, or a country educates the newer generations on the culture itself. Schools, as we know them now, teach reading, writing, arithmetic, history and science. In universities we learn logic, philosophy, etc. How a society educates its young not only defines its identity but also the way it defines itself for the future. If a society recognizes the importance of education to its existence, then it will make sure to place education high on its list of priorities. Unfortunately, that has not been the case in the United States. Other priorities have been distractions, and this has robbed several generations, of an education that should be worthy of free society, and a country like ours.
I have always been more of a pro-process education vs. content education thinker, and have felt that the first and foremost goal of schooling should be focusing everything on teaching the child the skills to teach himself. It is not at the expense of the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic. It?s simply filtering everything through that goal.
The learning centers we have are the parents (family), the schools, religion, and later the external world (without supervision). The parents give us our first glimpse of the world and our first impressions of it. The schools begin the socialization process along side the religion which presumably deals with spiritual and ethical values. Then we are grown up, and expected to go out into the ?external world? and not only survive, but be contributing members as well. This is where it?s determined whether a society has been successful or not in teaching its younger generations.
What parents can do is initially set the stage and create the best possible foundation for the child to enter the society via the school system. They can first instill that all-important perception that the world is a trust-able place (and also identify the parameters of that trust). They can also encourage curiosity, imagination, and the ability to observe what is going on around them, assess risk all of which will enable the child to make better choices.
All these things are positive things but the one that is most important is instilling in children the gradual ability to be independent of their parents. The parents should want their children to grow to be independent, so they can feel comfortable that their children will survive and do well when they are no longer around.
Schools can do other things too. They introduce the child to his first social group situation. But they can also include skills like anger management and further the development of risk assessment as part of the child?s growing cognitive abilities. They have the potential for greater cultural education, skills such as logic and ethics in addition to the basic reading, writing, arithmetic skills, at a much earlier age than is now considered possible through schooling.
Religion or Spiritual institutions, can also teach morality, ethics and things related to the spirit.
One subset to all this is Sex Education. What happens in real life is that the parents are split about wanting the schools to teach it, at least within certain parameters. Religion doesn?t really teach anything about sex except to abstain until marriage. When the schools attempt to teach it, the parents get more ambivalent about what the parameters should be, while religion insists that the schools should only be involved in teaching abstinence. So my conclusion is that the parents should be the ones who have the ultimate responsibility, and should put aside their embarrassment and discuss it with their children, or else they will learn it from the external world without any supervision.

Why Men Have Affairs ? Revealing Insights Into The Type Of Man ...
What separates men who have affairs from those who don?t? Even when a relationship turns sour, some men choose to cheat while others don?t. When men are polled about relationships and affairs, the unsettling truth comes out.
There are in fact core reasons why men have affairs. When you understand these reasons, you can address your own relationship in ways to make a guy fall in love with you so he never wants to leave.
Revealing Insights From Men Who Have Affairs
Men who cheat offer revealing insights women can use to enhance their own relationships and keep their man from straying. So why do men cheat? Here are 8 of the most common reasons:
1.) ?I?m married to a woman who nags and complains incessantly.?
2.) ?I can?t keep my wife happy anymore. Even when I try to do something right, it ends up backfiring on me.?
3.) ?I don?t have freedom over my own life anymore. It?s constant ?do this?, ?do that?. I fee like she?s controlling my life.?
4.) ?She used to care about looking good for me. Now she just let?s herself go and I?m losing the physical attraction I once felt for her.?
5.) ?Sex? I wish I knew what that was. It?s been ages since we made love.?
6.) ?Our relationship isn?t fun and exciting anymore. Just seems like it?s nothing but stress. I?m stressed all day at work and then I have to come home to a relationship that makes me feel even more stressed.?
7.) ?I don?t feel admired or appreciated any longer. She used to make me feel like her Prince Charming.?
8.) ?I can?t really say why I cheated. I got approached by a super attractive woman and I guess I couldn?t resist.?
So what can women take away from all this?
First, if a man is happy in a relationship, he is much less likely to cheat. Thus, you need to understand what men want. Always do what you can to make your man feel admired and appreciated. Never make him feel like you are trying to change him.
Men react much better to positive reinforcement than they do to nagging and complaining. Most women simply don?t understand this.
The way to get what you want from your man is to reward him when he does something right, rather than yelling or complaining when he does something wrong. It?s in his nature to want to please you and make you happy if you don?t cause him to become defensive and guarded.
Next, realize sometimes men cheat simply because they can. It?s not your fault. He may even be happy in his relationship with you, but temptation may be too powerful to resist. Men are able to separate love and sex much more easily than women. In their own mind, they justify that cheating is ok because ?it?s just sex, not love.?

5 Home Staging Tips | Real Estate Agents
Staging a home is a crucial step in selling your house in today?s Miami real estate market. The house must look inviting and appealing to a potential buyer. The buyers must visualize themselves living in the house and must feel welcome and at ease when viewing the property.
Miami real estate ? These are the 5 staging tips for selling your home.
1. Landscaping ? First thing you see is the landscaping. Some Miami real estate buyers won?t even go inside the house if the grass is dead and the trees and bushes are overgrown and abandoned. Fresh flowers are always very popular. Mow your lawn at least twice a week. Make sure the grass is green and there are no dead spots. Pruning is also recommended so the garden looks fresh and lively. Consider colorful flowers like impatience or carnations. Add small fountain to give it a classical look. Clear your garden of all leaves, trash and other eyesores. A well manicure and professional looking landscaping is essential in creating that first impression.
2. Painting ? A freshly painted house is a good way to welcome a potential buyer. Choose light colors instead of overbearing colors that will scare the buyer away. Don?t paint the house in shocking pink or red. The colors should be beige or peach. The colors should be eye pleasing to create a homey look. Do not paint each wall in a room a different color. Paint the whole room with the same color paint. There is no need to paint the outside of the house unless the paint is falling off.
3. Cleaning ? The house must be clean and smell nice and fresh. There?s nothing worse that a house that is cluttered with junk and dirty. Pick up dirty clothes and shoes. Vacuum the carpets and use some aroma. Clean the tiles and the bathroom, especially the toilet and the shower. The kitchen must be sparkling clean and all pots and pans should be put away. Pick up the bed and cleat the night table. A clean house will invite buyers to return and stay.
4. Lighting ? Turn on the lights so the house won?t look dark and dreary. Open all drapes so the sunshine comes in. Arrange for home showing for daytime if possible. A dark house is very depressing and sends a wrong message to a potential Miami real estate buyer. The correct lighting will create a feeling of openness and added space.
5. Fixing ? Hire a handyman to fix minor items around the house that won?t make the house look like if it?s falling apart. Fix a leaking sink that won?t stop running and the water drip is obvious and annoying. Screw in all doors and closet handles so they will not come off when pulled and opened by a potential Miami real estate buyer. Adjust all cabinet doors so they close properly and don?t appear broken. Try to do the work yourself first but if you don?t know how or don?t have the time you must hire a professional to do the work.
Creating the right ambience and inviting the buyers to come back and stay is a crucial step in order to sell your home in Miami real estate. You should consider hiring a home staging professional for thorough and specific tips. Landscaping, painting with the right color, cleaning the house, proper lighting and sunshine, fixing and repairing the property are good ways to get the house ready for sale in the Miami real estate market.

East Timor votes in test for young nation
East Timor voted Saturday in the country's second presidential election as a free nation, seen as a key test for a young democracy taking charge of its own security as UN forces prepare to leave.
Polling began in the morning and ended at 3 pm (0600 GMT) with no unrest reported in a contest that pits the Nobel Prize-winning incumbent Jose Ramos-Horta against 11 other hopefuls.
Voting was remarkably organised for a poor and chronically unstable country still traumatised by Indonesia's brutal 24-year occupation, which ended with a vote for independence in 1999.
"Everything was orderly and well, smooth and without irregularities or an atmosphere of intimidation," Jamie Gonclaves, a poll station worker, told AFP.
Polling was also markedly peaceful, standing in stark contrast to the deadly pre-election violence that erupted in 2006, which left the country on the brink of civil war.
"There has not been a single incidence of violence, so that's great for the country," Ramos-Horta said after voting in the capital Dili, with coffee-brown ink on his index finger indicating he had exercised his democratic right.
A large turnout was reported nationwide, with some stations having to dip into reserve ballots, election officials said.
At a school house in the village of Balibar, in the cool hills overlooking the capital Dili, voters trickled in about an hour after polls opened at 7 am (2200 GMT Friday), some carrying babies or toddlers and many barefoot.
The vote marks the country's second presidential election as a free nation and is the first in a series of key events in a pivotal period for the country.
In May, East Timor will celebrate 10 years of independence, which came after three years of UN administration. Then, in June, voters will choose a new government in a general election.
At the end of the year the nation of 1.1 million people bids goodbye to UN forces stationed in the country since 1999.
Among East Timor's many problems is its heavy reliance on energy reserves, which account for around 90 percent of state revenues.
The International Monetary Fund calls it the "most oil-dependent economy in the world".
"It is an obligation for every citizen to vote because this is a democracy and we have the right to choose our own leaders," said Sidonia Perreira, a government clerk who walked to the school house with his wife and two small children.
Constitutionally, the presidency is largely a ceremonial role, but its profile has been boosted by Ramos-Horta, who shared the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to resolve the independence conflict.
The popular 62-year-old, who survived a 2008 assassination attempt, is the second post-independence president after Xanana Gusmao -- a former anti-Indonesia rebel leader who is now prime minister.
The race for the presidency is largely a three-way contest between Ramos-Horta, the Fretilin party's Francisco "Lu Olo" Guterres and former armed forces chief Taur Matan Ruak, a guerrilla leader during the occupation.
Candidates must garner more than 50 percent of the vote for an outright win, otherwise a run-off will be held in coming weeks.
"There will be no second round. I am confident I will win today," Ruak told reporters shortly after voting at a Dili school crowded with voters, journalists, international observers and a stray dog nursing puppies.
Ramos-Horta won in a second-round of voting against Guterres in 2007, buoyed by the support of Gusmao's Congress for the Reconstruction of East Timor (CNRT) party.
But this time the party is backing Ruak. Ramos-Horta has been increasingly critical of Gusmao's government, but he said he was not displeased with the prime minister's decision to back his rival.
"I'm very happy he's supporting one of my favourite candidates. If someone supports (Ruak) I'm happy because I admire (Ruak)," he told reporters after voting.
Formal results from Saturday's vote are not expected until early next week.
International observers and representatives from Australia, the European Union and Portuguese-speaking nations were monitoring the polls.

WikiLeaks' Assange plans bid for Australian Senate

(AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth, File)
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ? WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange plans to run for a seat in the Australian Senate in elections due next year despite being under virtual house arrest in England and facing sex crime allegations in Sweden, the group said Saturday.
The 40-year-old Australian citizen is fighting extradition to Sweden. He has taken his legal battle all the way to Britain's Supreme Court, which is expected to rule on his case soon.
"We have discovered that it is possible for Julian Assange to run for the Australian Senate while detained. Julian has decided to run," WikiLeaks announced on Twitter.
Assange has criticized Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard's center-left government for not standing up for him against the potential threat of his extradition to the United States for prosecution over WikiLeaks' release of hundreds of thousands of classified U.S. documents.
Australian police have concluded that WikiLeaks and Assange have not broken any Australian laws by publishing the U.S. cables, although Gillard has condemned the action as "grossly irresponsible."
John Wanna, an Australian National University political scientist, said it was possible for Assange to run for a Senate seat if he remains on the Australian electoral roll despite living overseas for several years.
"If he gets on the roll, then he can stand as long as he's solvent and not in jail and not insane," Wanna said.
Being convicted of a crime punishable under Australian law by 12 months or more in prison can disqualify a person from running for the Australian Parliament for the duration of the sentence, even if it is suspended.
Constitutional lawyer George Williams of the University of New South Wales said that provision of the constitution has never been tested in the courts in the 111-year history of the Australian federation and probably would not apply to a criminal conviction in a foreign country such as Sweden.
"I'm not aware of an impediment to him standing, even if he was convicted," Williams said.
Any adult Australian citizen can run for the Australian Parliament, but few succeed without the backing of a major political party. Only one of Australia's 76 current senators does not represent a party.
Every Australian election attracts candidates who have little hope of winning and use their campaigns to seek publicity for various political or commercial causes.
Wanna said the odds are against Assange winning a seat, but that he could receive more than 4 percent of the votes in his nominated state because of his high profile. At that threshold, candidates can claim more than $2 per vote from the government to offset their campaign expenses. Assange's bill to the taxpayer could reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The next Senate election cannot be called before July 2013 and is due around August. Candidates cannot officially register as candidates until the election is called at least a month before the poll date.
Assange's mother, Christine Assange, a professional puppeteer from rural Queensland state, said Saturday she had yet to discuss her son's political bid with him.
She criticized what she called the government's willingness to put its defense treaty with the United States ahead of the rights of an Australian citizen.
"The No. 1 issue at the next election regardless of who you vote for is democracy in this country ? whether or not we're just a state of the U.S. and whether or not our citizens are going to be just handed over as a sacrifice to the U.S. alliance," she said.

Google Play Store updated, new tabbed My Apps UI and app review features
An update is beginning to push out to the Android Market Google Play Store bumping it to build number 3.5.15. With it comes a change in the UI to the "My Apps" area, and some handy new features built into application reviews that bring it more into line with the desktop version.
The change to the "My Apps" area is the most obvious change brought with this latest update. Gone is the single -- and incredibly long in some cases -- list of old, and in comes a new tabbed interface in the same vein as the main store. The installed tab is now split into two parts, the updates still showing at the top but the remainder are now labelled as "up to date" below.
Swipe left and we now get the "All" tab. Handily this contains all the applications you've ever installed. Gone are the days of scrolling all the way to the bottom of your installed apps list to find your not installed paid apps selection. This also contains all the free applications you installed before but don't have currently. Everything is here. This tab also has a handy dropdown box at the top listing all your Google accounts, providing a much smoother and easier way of switching without having to go into the menus.
Heading out into the main store, further changes can be found in the app reviews. Now the device on which the app on the device which the reviewer was using. Reviews can also be filtered by "most helpful first" or by "newest first," and also for the latest version of the app and for your type of device only. This last one could be particularly handy for anyone running Ice Cream Sandwich, since we still seem to have compatibility issues with some applications.
One final thing to note. When I first started trying to download apps after the update, everything kept flashing up with "Error 941." Force stopping the app, clearing cache and starting again seemed to do the trick. Not great, but seemed to fix the issue at least.
For a few screenshots hit the break. If you find any other features worth noting, shout out in the comments below.
