Pitch In and Tackle Do-It-Together Home Improvement Projects ...

In today?s All Thing Women blog post I wanted to talk about a great article I found in the Eastern Arizona Courier talking about DIY home improvement projects. When looking to get jobs done around the house, I am guilty of simply asking my wife and if she is busy doing other odd jobs I will just try to complete the task by myself. The article below talks about how do-it-yourself jobs can be done more efficiently if we turn them into do-it-together projects.

Why do-it-yourself (DIY) when you can do-it-together? Now DIYers are teaming up with friends, families or companies to tackle home improvement and spring-cleaning projects.

?Tackling home improvement or maintenance projects is a great way to work together with others in your community to accomplish more in less time,? says Kathy Krafka Harkema, spokesperson for Pella Windows and Doors.

How about tackling a do-it-together project like tree-trimming, landscaping or gardening projects to help spruce up the neighborhood? Share tools and labor with friends to clean up the backyard, build a deck or patio, or paint outdoor areas. Get the kids involved in chores like planting trees, spreading mulch or washing decks, patio furniture or your windows. Join together to get all the windows in the neighborhood sparkly clean.

About 69 percent of men and 74 percent of women are likely to clean and wash their windows during spring cleaning, according to the 2011 National Spring Cleaning Survey by the American Cleaning Institute. But many are unsure of how to do it.

?Make conducting a quick home check-up and cleaning your windows part of your spring home improvement checklist to create a better view and help enhance your home?s potential energy efficiency,? Krafka Harkema says. ?Team up with your neighbors so everyone?s windows look good. Use the right tools, cleaners and equipment to do the job safely and correctly.?

Window washing tips

Follow these tips from experts at Pella on how to clean windows and insect screens:

* Delegate members of your team to different jobs to maximize efficiency.

* Use a premixed vinegar and water solution (one part white vinegar for 10 parts water) and a soft, lint-free cloth to wash window glass.

* Apply a generous amount of cleaner and rinse with clear water if streaks remain.

* If needed to remove grease, oil, tape adhesive, crayons or paint marks, apply a solvent such as acetone or mineral spirits to a paper towel. Wipe clean using a dry, clean, lint-free cloth.

* Avoid ammonia- or alcohol-based glass cleaners that can leave streaks or a film that attracts moisture and dust.

* Avoid using a razor blade to scrape off stubborn marks on glass ? permanent scratches may result.

* To remove dust and dirt from screens, simply vacuum with the upholstery brush.

* For grease spots on kitchen or patio screens, use hot water and a mild detergent.

* For a flat screen on a storm door or patio door, remove the screen and wash with soap and water. Or use a drapery brush attachment on a vacuum.

Remember, cleaning windows from inside your home is safer than standing on a tall ladder. Consider replacement windows with a tilt-in feature, like Pella double-hung windows, or extra-wide openings between the sash and frame, like Pella casement windows, to make window cleaning easier.

Best Diet For A Diabetic Person

Article Directory :: Health & Fitness Articles

A person who has diabetes must make specific adjustments to his diet, in order to maintain proper blood sugar levels and slow progression of the disease. If you have diabetes and you are not careful about what you eat, you run the risk of suffering adverse effects including glaucoma, stroke, and even a diabetic coma.

By losing excess weight and eating sensibly, you can minimize the symptoms of diabetes and effectively control your blood sugar levels. Many people automatically think that being diagnosed with diabetes means that you must stop eating anything that tastes good. This is simply not true, and people with diabetes can enjoy most of the same foods that everyone else does, with a few simple modifications.

The best diet for a diabetic person involves eating on a regular basis in smaller portions. You must maintain your blood sugar levels, by eating smaller portions more often, it is easier for your body to deal with what you have consumed. Overeating will cause a serious rise in your blood glucose levels.

If you have only recently been diagnosed with diabetes, you need to make dietary changes as soon as you can, and if you need to, obtain a referral to a dietician from your family doctor. A dietician can help you to formulate an eating plan that contains foods that you enjoy and will also advise you on the appropriate portions that you should be eating. One of the most important parts of your eating plan is to have something to eat as soon as possible when you get up in the morning. This is extremely important because it helps to normalize your blood sugar since you have been fasting for about 7 hours while sleeping.

The government food pyramid is a great starting point to get a good idea of what types of foods you should be eating. You will need to eat fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy and lean meats. The vegetables that you choose should be non starchy vegetables and eating fresh fruit is better than canned fruit because sugary syrup is used in packing the latter. Being diabetic does not mean that you can never again eat sugar. If you plan to have sweets, eat a small amount and be sure to get some exercise after you eat some. It is important to burn the sugar off as quickly as you can after you eat it.

A good walk of about 60 minutes per day is a great way to get your exercise, and you should generally try to do this at least every other day if you cannot manage it daily. Keep in mind that your diabetes is here to stay and you have to learn to manage it. Making lifestyle changes for the long term is the best way to remain healthy. If you are exercising regularly and not losing weight, do not become discouraged. Studies have shown that exercise can improve your insulin sensitivity.

There are probably some local support groups in your area. It is a good idea to join in a group for the moral support, as well as the opportunity to learn more about managing and living with diabetes. Public health centers also have free information and nutrition guides to assist you in making the necessary changes to your diet.

Facebook buys Instagram photo app for $1 bn

The big ticket purchase was seen by some as a move by Facebook to strengthen its defenses against Google and blazingly hot newcomer Pinterest in the weeks ahead of what promises to be a history-making stock market debut.

"For years, we've focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family," Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said in announcing the deal.

"Now, we'll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests."

Zuckerberg called the acquisition "an important milestone for Facebook because it's the first time we've ever acquired a product and company with so many users" but promised it was a rare acquisition.

An Instagram application tuned to Apple's iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices has been downloaded more than 27 million times since the first version was released in late 2010 by the San Francisco startup.

Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom released the figure while providing a glimpse last month at a version of the application being tailored for smartphones power by Google-backed Android software.

The free mini-program lets people give classic looks to square photos using "filters" and then share them at Twitter, Facebook or other social networks.

Apple crowned Instagram its app-of-the-year for 2011.

"We're psyched to be joining Facebook," Systrom said in a blog post Monday on the Instagram website.

"It's important to be clear that Instagram is not going away," he continued. "We'll be working with Facebook to evolve Instagram and build the network."

Instagram's roster of backers includes Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey.

Facebook announces billion-dollar-deal to buy Instagram

Facebook announced Monday that it made a billion-dollar-deal to buy the startup behind wildly popular smartphone photo sharing application Instagram.

Facebook users flood the world's largest social network with images to share with friends, but the website hasn't proven to be an ideal stage for organizing pictures around topics -- a forte that has made Pinterest a star.

"Facebook is pushing into the Pinterest space," said analyst Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies.

"The thing about Instagram and Pinterest is that they are really interesting in the context of posting pictures around topics," he continued.

Silicon Valley analyst Rob Enderle of Enderle Group said that Facebook is building a defense against Pinterest, which has been luring people's attention away from the social network.

"Instagram is a reasonable competitive hedge against Pinterest," Enderle said.

"At the heart of both startups is picture indexing -- they are just handled differently."

While Bajarin referred to the billion-dollar price tag for Instagram "boggling," Enderle contended that it could prove to be a bargain if it helps Facebook shine for its IPO on Wall Street.

Facebook in February filed for a stock offering and could raise as much as $10 billion in the largest flotation ever by an Internet company on Wall Street.

Facebook -- the leading social network in all but six countries, notably China and Russia -- said it has more than 845 million users, including 483 million who log in daily.

Facebook's value has been estimated at between $75 billion and $100 billion.

"The Instagram buy could be worth tens of billions of dollars if it holds off Pinterest and Facebook remains on top," Enderle said.

"Given what Facebook is trying to do -- get a massive valuation when it goes public -- a billion dollars is a trivial sum."

No link between video games and aggression: study

4 hrs.

For years, countless studies have claimed that video games, particularly ones containing violent content, are the cause of aggression in the real world. But researchers have not only recently discovered benefits from game playing, but also how such previous studies might be in error.

A research team at the University of Goethe, in Sweden, spent hundreds of hours playing competitive online games and watching others. They focused on games that not only contained aggressive content, but in which the goal was to fight each other.?

The results, according to Science Daily, betray what many might assume. Most of the time, players must actually play nice with each other, instead of just blowing each other up.?Clear thinking and coordination is also honed in such activities.

As a direct result, players who act aggressively or too emotionally do not perform as well in similar situations. Being rude is also a deterrent; abrasive and obnoxious players will naturally have a hard time finding someone to play alongside.

And it is this last finding that has led Jonas Ivarsson, one of the researchers, to cast doubt on all previous studies that link aggression in the virtual space and aggression in real life:?

The suggested link between games and aggression is based on the notion of transfer, which means that knowledge gained in a certain situation can be used in an entirely different context. The whole idea of transfer has been central in education research for a very long time. The question of how a learning situation should be designed in order for learners to be able to use the learned material in real life is very difficult, and has no clear answers? 'In a nutshell, we're questioning the whole gaming and violence debate, since it's not based on a real problem but rather on some hypothetical reasoning.

The finding is sure to be encouraging to those have long defended video games against claims they are to blame for societal ills. Meanwhile, those who have an agenda against violent games, or games in general, such as these lawmakers, will surely take issue with the University of Goethe's findings. At the very least, there is now more scientific data to chew on.

(AP) ? Asian stock markets declined Monday after U.S. hiring slowed in March, raising doubts about the durability of the recovery in the world's No. 1 economy.

Oil prices fell to near $102 a barrel amid hopes international talks this week may help avoid military action over Iran's nuclear program.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index lost 1.5 percent to 9,546.26 and China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index declined 0.9 percent to 2,285.78. Seoul shed 1.6 percent to 1,997.08. Hong Kong, Sydney and Bangkok were closed for holidays.

In Europe, the Frankfurt, Paris and London markets were also closed.

U.S. employers added 120,000 jobs last month, according to the Labor Department. That was half the December-February pace and well short of the 210,000 economists were expecting.

"The regional markets may have overreacted to one job report since the U.S. economic data released prior to Friday were generally healthy," said analyst Alex Huang of Taipei's Mega Securities Corp.

Investors also were watching China, where analysts expect data due this week to show economic growth slowed further in the latest quarter.

"One can hardly expect very encouraging news to boost the markets either," Huang said.

The U.S. unemployment rate fell from 8.3 percent in February to 8.2 percent, the lowest since January 2009, but that was largely because many Americans stopped looking for work.

Elsewhere in Asia, Taiwan's Taiex lost 1.4 percent to 7,600.87 and Singapore's benchmark fell 1 percent to 2,956.72. India's Sensex shed 1.2 percent to 17,278.4.

In currency markets, the dollar rose slightly to 81.47 yen while the euro was down just over 0.1 percent at $1.306.

Benchmark oil for May delivery was down $1.30 to $102.01 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract added $1.84 to settle at $103.31 in New York on Thursday. The global oil market was closed Friday for the Good Friday holiday.

Peru: Hose gets food, drink to 9 trapped miners | ToWonder.com ...

LIMA, Peru (AP) ? Peruvian authorities say nine trapped miners are being supplied with sports drinks, soup and food while police, firefighters and other workers work to free them.

Police chief Jose Saavedra in southern Peru?s Ica region says the bottled items are being pushed to the miners through a hose.

Saavedra says the men have been trapped in a horizontal mining shaft that collapsed Thursday not very deep under the surface. He says the miners are behind debris about six meters (20 feet) wide that collapsed when they set off an explosion to dislodge copper ore.

The miners were working on their own at a mine that reportedly shut down commercial operations in the early 1980s in a hamlet about 282 kilometers (175 miles) south of Lima.

marriage without affection/sex/touching (1), Social / Dating ...

I remember an Elder in my local congregation saying from the platform, that as soon as youve had sex, you have to have a shower and change the bed linen!

I wonder what scripture he got that from?, maybe the one where it says "it is in vain that they worship me as they teach doctrines of men as commandments"

Now as a single man that came in from the ouside world, and in my 20s, I was constantly hung up on the fear that if I did meet a nice Sister, that the chances are, that after marriage I would never actually see her naked, and that the kinkiest sex to be expected would bt missionary with the lights off.

As it turned out, when I did meet a Sister, she was so innocent that she hadnt even heard of oral sex, but it didnt really matter as much as the emotional attachment, but because I had a job and a mortgage, and only managed Auxiliary Pioneering during my holidays, I was classed as one of the Untouchables, so the Elders told her she would please Jehovah more by ditching me and finding a pioneer. Which she did, though within a week she was asking me out again, but by then I had got so down that my Attachment Disorder had firmly kicked in and I didnt respond.

It was that incident that more than any other convinced me Jehovah didnt want me so within a few years I committed what I felt at the time to be deliberate self-damnation by falling away.

Small business marketing and advertising

Article by Lyndon David

One of the biggest problems plaguing the functions of small business marketing and advertising is that most owners think they are proficient in handling both the responsibilities. Agreed that is highly possible that a small business owner might be aware of the various rules and principles of small business marketing and advertising and he may also be able to successfully deploy various modern strategies to his business ? but come to think of it, he may not be able to devote enough time and resources for the proper implementation of the strategies.

Let us admit that none of us are good at everything we do. We are professionals and a true professionally successful entrepreneur realizes this home truth than anyone else. That is the reason why a businessman hires the professional services of an accountant, auditor, human relations expert, inventory control manager and more. As a small business owner, you too should allocate some amount of your marketing budget to hire the services of a professional to manage your small business marketing and advertising.

There are several benefits if you take the help of a part time or even a full time person to take care of your marketing and advertising. of course such people come at a fee, but at the end of the day, you might find that the assured profitability is also part of the package deal ? that you enjoy when you employ a consultant or a manager. Here are some of the reasons why you need professional help of a marketing and advertising consultant to help you promote your small business:

? You get more time in your hands to devote to the other aspects of your business and look after its growth and development. ? If you spend your time and resources in looking after the marketing and advertising parts of your business, you would tend to neglect important aspects like future marketing plans, global opportunities and more. ? With a professional by your side, you have round the clock access to the latest online marketing and advertising techniques which could be adopted by your competitors. ? Keeping track of market developments, competitors? activities and monitoring the success of your marketing and advertising campaigns is a full time job and any half-measures can ruin your chances of profitability and consistency. When you have someone to assist you in these aspects, you are more focused and can take quick decisions to reverse a process, in case you find that it is not yielding the desired results. Having said so far, what are you going to look for in a small business marketing and advertising professional?

? He or she must be educationally qualified and must have some amount of experience in handling the marketing and advertising responsibilities in a big or a successful small firm.? Depending on your line of product or services, you should aim to hire someone who has worked in the same field earlier. ? If you are keen to hire someone without any prior work experience (cost considerations) you must ensure that you do a proper background check as well as go through his educational background. ? In case he or she is joining you after a stint at a competitors? company, then the candidate is a good choice but a referral could be a good idea. ? The person can have experience of working in an advertising agency or be completely familiar with jobs like market trend analysis, customer segmentation, market research, interpretation of data and figures, competitors? strategy and performance analysis, etc.

With the right small business marketing and advertising person by your side, there is no reason why you cannot achieve great heights of glory and success in your online business.

Which plants will survive droughts, climate change?

Friday, April 6, 2012

New research by UCLA life scientists could lead to predictions of which plant species will escape extinction from climate change.

Droughts are worsening around the world, posing a great challenge to plants in all ecosystems, said Lawren Sack, a UCLA professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and senior author of the research. Scientists have debated for more than a century how to predict which species are most vulnerable.

Sack and two members of his laboratory have made a fundamental discovery that resolves this debate and allows for the prediction of how diverse plant species and vegetation types worldwide will tolerate drought, which is critical given the threats posed by climate change, he said.

The research is currently available in the online edition of Ecology Letters, a prestigious ecology journal, and will be published in an upcoming print edition.

Why does a sunflower wilt and dessicate quickly when the soil dries, while the native chaparral shrubs of California survive long dry seasons with their evergreen leaves? Since there are many mechanisms involved in determining the drought tolerance of plants, there has been vigorous debate among plant scientists over which trait is most important. The UCLA team, funded by the National Science Foundation, focused on a trait called "turgor loss point, which had never before been proven to predict drought tolerance across plant species and ecosystems.

A fundamental difference between plants and animals is that plant cells are enclosed by cell walls while animal cells are not. To keep their cells functional, plants depend on "turgor pressure" ? pressure produced in cells by internal salty water pushing against and holding up the cell walls. When leaves open their pores, or stomata, to capture carbon dioxide for photosynthesis, they lose a considerable amount of this water to evaporation. This dehydrates the cells, inducing a loss of pressure.

During drought, the cell's water becomes harder to replace. The turgor loss point is reached when leaf cells get to a point at which their walls become flaccid; this cell-level loss of turgor causes the leaf to become limp and wilted, and the plant cannot grow, Sack said.

"Drying soil may cause a plant's cells to reach turgor loss point, and the plant will be faced with the choice of either closing its stomata and risking starvation or photosynthesizing with wilted leaves and risking damaging its cell walls and metabolic proteins," Sack said. "To be more drought-tolerant, the plant needs to change its turgor loss point so that its cells will be able to keep their turgor even when soil is dry."

The biologists showed that within ecosystems and around the world, plants that are more drought-tolerant had lower turgor loss points; they could maintain their turgor despite drier soil.

The team also resolved additional decades-old controversies, overturning the long-held assumptions of many scientists about the traits that determine turgor loss point and drought tolerance. Two traits related to plant cells have been thought to affect plants' turgor loss point and improve drought tolerance: Plants can make their cell walls stiffer or they can make their cells saltier by loading them with dissolved solutes. Many prominent scientists have leaned toward the "stiff cell wall" explanation because plants in dry zones around the globe tend to have small, tough leaves. Stiff cell walls might allow the leaf to avoid wilting and to hold onto its water during dry times, scientists reasoned. Little had been known about the saltiness of cells for plants around the world.

The UCLA team has now demonstrated conclusively that it is the saltiness of the cell sap that explains drought tolerance across species. Their first approach was mathematical; the team revisited the fundamental equations that govern wilting behavior and solved them for the first time. Their mathematical solution pointed to the importance of saltier cell sap. Saltier cell sap in each plant cell allows the plant to maintain turgor pressure during dry times and to continue photosynthesizing and growing as drought ensues. The equation showed that thick cell walls do not contribute directly to preventing wilting, although they provide indirect benefits that can be important in some cases ? protection from excessive cell shrinking and from damage due to the elements or insects and mammals.

The team also collected for the first time drought-tolerance trait data for species worldwide, which confirmed their result. Across species within geographic areas and across the globe, drought tolerance was correlated with the saltiness of the cell sap and not with the stiffness of cell walls. In fact, species with stiff cell walls were found not only in arid zones but also in wet systems like rainforests, because here too, evolution favors long-lived leaves protected from damage.

The pinpointing of cell saltiness as the main driver of drought tolerance cleared away major controversies, and it opens the way to predictions of which species could escape extinction from climate change, Sack said.

"The salt concentrated in cells holds on to water more tightly and directly allows plants to maintain turgor during drought," said research co-author Christine Scoffoni, a UCLA doctoral student in the department of ecology and evolutionary biology.

The role of the stiff cell wall was more elusive.

"We were surprised to see that having a stiffer cell wall actually reduced drought tolerance slightly ? contrary to received wisdom ? but that many drought-tolerant plants with lots of salt also had stiff cell walls," said lead author Megan Bartlett, a UCLA graduate student in the department of ecology and evolutionary biology.

This seeming contradiction is explained by the secondary need of drought-tolerant plants to protect their dehydrating cells from shrinking as they lose turgor pressure, the researchers said.

"While a stiff wall doesn't maintain the cell turgor, it prevents the cells from shrinking as the turgor decreases and holds in water so that cells are still large and hydrated, even at turgor loss point," Bartlett explained. "So the ideal combination for a plant is to have a high solute concentration to keep turgor pressure and a stiff cell wall to prevent it from losing too much water and shrinking as the leaf water pressure drops. But even drought-sensitive plants often have thick cell walls because the tough leaves are also good protection against herbivores and everyday wear and tear."

Even though the team showed that turgor loss point and salty cell sap have exceptional power to predict a plant's drought tolerance, some of the most famous and diverse desert plants ? including cacti, yuccas and agaves ? exhibit the opposite design, with many flexible-walled cells that hold dilute sap and would lose turgor rapidly, Sack said.

"These succulents are actually terrible at tolerating drought, and instead they avoid it," he said. "Because much of their tissue is water storage cells, they can open their stomata minimally during the day or at night and survive with their stored water until it rains. Flexible cell walls help them release water to the rest of the plant."

This new study showed that the saltiness of cells in plant leaves can explain where plants live and the kinds of plants that dominate ecosystems around the world. The team is working with collaborators at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Gardens in Yunnan, China, to develop a new method for rapidly measuring turgor loss point across a large number of species and make possible the critical assessment of drought tolerance for thousands of species for the first time.

"We're excited to have such a powerful drought indicator that we can measure easily," Bartlett said. "We can apply this across entire ecosystems or plant families to see how plants have adapted to their environment and to develop better strategies for their conservation in the face of climate change."

GOP US Rep. Tim Johnson drops re-election bid

URBANA, Ill. (AP) ? Longtime Illinois U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson cited family obligations as he tearfully dropped his re-election bid on Thursday, leading to a crowded race among his fellow Republicans to replace him and kindling Democrats' hopes of taking the seat to help regain control of the U.S. House.

The six-term congressman, who built a reputation for breaking with his party on some issues, said he plans to retire when his current term ends because he wants to devote more time to his nine children and more than a dozen grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

"One of my grandsons is 2 years old. I have seen him for a total of about 10 minutes," the 65-year-old Johnson said, pausing to fight back tears during a news conference in his hometown of Urbana. "I have another who asked me not long ago if I was ever going to come to one of his ballgames. I didn't have an answer."

The announcement came just weeks after his easy primary win and baffled officials in both parties. It left the state GOP with the task of choosing a replacement candidate to run in his new western Illinois district ? and at least two dozen Republicans were already lining up for the chance.

"He's been in public office for a long, long time. The suddenness is a little striking," said Illinois Republican Party Chairman Pat Brady.

Johnson said he first thought of retiring late last year as his family geared up to attend a holiday festival in a nearby town. He was called back to Washington to take a vote on an unemployment issue that he said should have been conducted much earlier.

"Man, there's got to be more to life than this," he said while surrounded by about two dozen family members. "I've been a part-time father all these years."

He said he was indirectly influenced by the health of a Republican colleague, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, who suffered a stroke in January. Johnson has a reputation for being health conscious ? he has been an avid swimmer, is often seen walking in a local mall and makes no secret of his low-fat diet ? and said he was healthy.

"At my age, three years can be 50 percent of the rest of your life," he said.

Johnson said his decision wasn't based on partisanship in federal or state politics, though he described it as the worst he'd ever seen. Johnson was elected to the Illinois General Assembly in 1976 and to Congress in 2000.

He hasn't been shy about breaking with his fellow GOP lawmakers. Johnson last year called for an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a stance he said he would encourage his successor to consider. Last month, he endorsed Texas Rep. Ron Paul in the Republican presidential race.

Johnson had been Illinois' only Republican member of Congress who didn't object to the new state congressional map, which they said Democrats had drawn to favor themselves. On Thursday, he said he didn't believe that the map had been gerrymandered by Democrats.

But only a small portion of his old eastern Illinois district was drawn into the new 13th Congressional District where he'd been running. It's a swath of mainly west-central Illinois that includes parts of 14 counties and leans toward Democrats.

Johnson earned a strong reputation for reaching out to constituents, making up to 100 calls to individuals in his district each day. He continued the approach during the primary election, attracting strong fundraising, and even rented an apartment in Litchfield, unfamiliar territory to him on the new congressional map.

"There's no one more energetic guy than that guy," said Montgomery County Republican Central Committee chairman Roy Hertel.

Johnson's seat had widely been considered safe by national Republicans. Come November, he would have faced perennial candidate Dr. David Gill, an emergency room physician who Johnson easily defeated three times in previous elections.

The National Republican Congressional Committee said Gill, who is pro-choice and advocates for comprehensive immigration reform, is too liberal for the district. And Johnson said Thursday that, while he respects Gill, he doesn't believe he has much of a chance of beating whoever the GOP selects to replace him.

But Democrats believed Johnson may have been more vulnerable this time around because of new constituents in a more Democratic-friendly district. And for the first time a decade, he faced opposition in a primary.

Gill, who narrowly won a primary contest against a Democratic candidate backed by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, thinks he is in a good position to win.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which believes the party could pick up five seats in Illinois, identified Johnson's district as one to watch. Illinois saw its first Republican-majority congressional delegation in years after a 2010 Republican surge sent five new GOP freshmen to Washington.

But Republicans have already lost one seat this year: Longtime U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo lost a primary battle with first-term Rep. Adam Kinzinger.

The process to replace Johnson will take shape over the coming weeks. More than two-dozen candidates have been mentioned as possible contenders including Rodney Davis, an aide to U.S. Rep. John Shimkus, and Johnson's former chief of staff, Jerry Clarke.

After those who are interested step forward, county chairmen from the 14 counties in the new district will vote, a process some said could be wrapped up by early May.

Fitness Equipment for the Elderly ? Enhanced Mobility through ...

Guest Post by Joel

A lot of things change as you get older. You may go from working to retired. You may go from waking up to a long to-do list to waking up with a blank day of no plans most of the time. It is often believed that people are naturally less active as they get older, but that attitude may be hurting the world?s population. Many countries are now experiencing large populations of people over the age of sixty, and studies are showing that many of them are not very active. The lack of daily activity is believed to be behind the growing numbers of disease and mobility problems in the aging population.

In response the increasingly aging population around the world, government-sponsored programs are starting to pop up. For example, Finland has established the Strength in Old Age program. This is just one example of a government-funded program aimed at increasing mobility and extending the life expectancy of citizens. This is in direct response to the growing population of the elderly in Finland, so the program targets problems affecting that population alone.

These programs are also being found in many other countries, including the United States. The goal is to combat the mobility problems that many people experience after the age of sixty. This will improve the quality of life for the elderly while helping lower the incidents of cancer, heart attack, and other health problems so prevalent today in the older populations.

Protecting Mobility through Exercise

How can something as simple as increasing cardiovascular exercise later in life lead to a longer life expectancy? Most people would assume that the exercise controls body weight and helps reduce risk of disease and illness, but that is only part of the picture. Studies are showing that aerobic capacity decreases as you age, but that it decreases quicker in people who are not active in daily life.

It is believed that increasing cardiovascular activity in older people will improve aerobic capacity in the elderly. What does that mean? It means that older people will have higher quality of life, as they will be able to walk up stairs, get up from a standing position, carry laundry baskets, and do other things that require adequate flow of oxygen throughout the body and to the lungs.

Cardiovascular exercise improves blood circulation throughout the body and challenges the lungs so they become more efficient. Light strength training can also improve strength and reduce the risk of injury. It can even increase bone density so there are fewer broken bones in the elderly population.

The Time Is Now

If programs that encourage exercise in populations over the age of sixty lead to a healthier elderly population, what would encouraging exercise in younger populations do for society? It makes sense that those who have remained active throughout their lives would have greater mobility and health when they join the older populations. This makes the case for programs that encourage exercise in all populations, starting with children.

Programs encouraging children to get active are already being supported by the federal government in the United States, and that trend is likely to continue with other countries experiencing an obesity epidemic. The goal is to encourage the elderly to make use of equipment that will improve their fitness, while also encouraging children to get active. Most active children will grow up to be active adults.

Healthy Suggestions for the Elderly

What suggestions are being made for those over the age of sixty who want to be healthier, remain mobile in old age, and hopefully live longer? Here are some suggestions that will help this population stay safe while growing stronger and healthier:

  • Bring fitness equipment into the home. This allows those who cannot drive or safely get outside for a walk to get some form of exercise on a daily basis. A trainer elliptical machine is a good option, since it is gentle on the joints yet can deliver a challenging cardiovascular workout that burns a lot of calories.
  • Pair the elderly up with someone younger and more in shape. They can exercise together, thus pushing one another while watching out for one another.
  • Encourage daily activity beyond deliberate exercise. For instance, one person over sixty may take up gardening to remain active while another may take a part-time volunteer job to ensure they are on their feet at least a couple hours each day.
  • Keep those over the age of sixty active socially. Those who continue to have lunch with friends, attend parties and gatherings, and do other social activities are less likely to get depressed and become sedentary.

Those over the age of sixty need all of the things that the younger population may need. They need social interaction and companionship. They need an active lifestyle that gives them something to look forward to each day. They definitely need consistent exercise, though they may need to protect their joints and put more effort to staying safe than younger populations.

Government programs will continue to encourage the aging population to stay active and healthy, but citizens need to do their part as well. If you know someone in this population, take steps to keep them healthy, active and mobile.

Joel continues to be amazed by the benefits a walking regime can bring to everyone?s life. As result of this, he created a fitness equipment site where he shares his opinion and experiences with trainer elliptical machines.

According to tweets by Vice President of user experience Margret Smith we may see all that and more soon, as she mentioned "expecting" the Spring Update with new video streaming apps and parental controls in HD menus to roll out to Premiere and Elite DVRs this month. As far as Comcast Xfinity On Demand, the rollout is targeted to begin in the San Francisco Bay Area, with an update for DVRs there this week before the feature is turned on later this month. This shaping up to be a very interesting year for the smiley faced DVR company with new hardware still waiting in the wings, add in all these new software capabilities and TiVo looks like a winner in more than just the legal battles.
